Dean’s Forum: The Future of Business Schools and Management Education

Time: 12:30-14:00

The deans of Thailand’s top business schools (in alphabetical order), AIT, Chula, NIDA, and Thammasat will discuss the future of business schools and management education. Where are we today and where will we be heading? What is the appropriate balance between teaching and research? How do we effectively bridge the gap between theory and practice? Towards the end of the discussion, the deans will take questions from the audience. A must for anyone involved in academia or interested in business schools!

Professor Lawrence Abeln is the Dean of AIT School of Management at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Prior to his appointment in 2016, he was the Dean of the Business School at University of Adelaide, one of Australia's prestigious 'Group of 8' institutions. He also served as the Deputy Dean of The University of Cambridge Judge Business School and Director of the MBA Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan School of Management. He has extensive experience in the media as a commentator and has written about the trends in graduate management education. He has been quoted in The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The London Times, The Independent and other international publications. He received his PhD in Management and MPhil in International Relations from University of Cambridge and BA from University of Pennsylvania where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Professor Pasu Decharin is the Dean of Chulalongkorn Business School at Chulalongkorn University. Prior to his deanship appointment, he had been a faculty at Chulalongkorn University since 1993. At Chulalongkorn Business School, Pasu taught courses on strategic management, management & organization. His area of research includes strategy and balanced scorecards. He has served as a consultant several leading organisations in Thailand. He has authored several textbooks on strategy, balanced scorecards, and leadership. His articles appear on a weekly basis in Krugthep Turakij for almost 15 years. Currently he serves as the President of AAPBS (Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools), Board of Director of AACSB International, and EPAS Accreditation Board. He received his PhD from Asian Institute of Technology, MBA from University of Colorada, Boulder, and BA from Chulalongkorn University.

Professor Viput Ongsakul is the Dean of NIDA Business School at the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA). Prior his deanship Viput had been a faculty of NIDA Business School since 2002. His teaching and research interests includes operation strategy and strategic management. He has served as a consultant to several leading entities such as National Telecommunication Commissions, Thailand Tobacco Monopoly, PTT Public Company, Thai Post, and Federation of Thai Industries to name a few. He has authored several textbooks on strategy and business in Thailand. He received his PhD and MS from Texas Tech University and B.Eng from Chulalongkorn University.

Professor Pipop Udorn is the Dean of Thammasat Business School at Thammasat University. Prior his deanship appointment in 2016, he was the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs of Thammasat University, Director of Thammasat University’s Human Resource Institute (HRI), and had been a faculty of Thammasat University since 1999. His teaching and research interests includes consumer commitment, customer relationship management, and human resources. He has served as a consultant to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Government Housing Bank, and the Government Lottery Office. Pipop received his PhD from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, MBA from George Washington University, and BA from Thammasat University.
